So I watched Curve again last night, and yeah… still messed me up a bit. Not gonna lie, I didn’t expect too much from this movie the first time. It’s one of those lowkey horror-thrillers that you kinda scroll past while lookin’ for something to watch. But if you give it a shot, it’ll crawl under your skin — in a good/bad way (depends how twisted you are lol).
Mallory (played by Julianne Hough — yep, the dancer girl) is heading out to meet her fiancé and spend the last few free days before their wedding. Typical stuff. She’s drivin’ down some backroad (of course), and her GPS is actin’ like it hates her. So what does she do? Picks up a hitchhiker named Christian.
And bruh… that’s where she messed up.
At first, this dude seems totally normal — polite, kinda charming even. But you know how horror movies go… it’s always the ones who smile the most. Christian starts getting creepy, real fast. Starts talkin’ about death and all that dark philosophy BS, and it doesn’t take long before he threatens her. Then BOOM — car crashes off a cliff. (Wild scene. Felt it in my stomach fr.)
Most of the movie takes place with Mallory stuck upside down in her car — like literally pinned between the dashboard and the seat. One of her legs is all jacked up, she’s got barely any water, and it’s freezing outside.
This is where the movie really gets interesting. You’re not just watching someone escape a killer — you’re watching someone slowly realize they might die alone in a ditch and no one will even find them. There’s a kind of dread that creeps up, and it’s more real than most horror movies I’ve seen.
Also… small side note: She pees in the car. Like… in her pants. Not sexy, just realistic. Respect to the filmmakers for keepin’ it gross and grounded lol.
Julianne Hough’s acting was actually way better than I expected. Like she really sold the desperation. You could almost feel her ribs hurting.
Cinematography? Tight. Claustrophobic shots that made me feel like I couldn’t breathe.
The villain isn’t over-the-top. He’s not a monster or a ghost. He’s just a cold, calculated creep — and honestly that’s scarier than some demon crap.
The ending? No spoilers, but let’s just say… satisfaction was delivered.
The backstory was weak af. I wanted to know more about Christian. What’s his deal? Why’s he killing random women? You never really get that.
Some lines of dialogue were corny. Like, horror-movie-corny.
81 minutes runtime — felt short. It builds up so well, and then boom, it’s done. Give us more struggle, more trauma, more everything!
If you’re into slow-burn, single-location thrillers like Frozen (2010), Buried, or The Shallows, you’ll prob like Curve. It’s not gonna change your life, but it’ll definitely give you that “I’m-never-picking-up-a-stranger-again” vibe.
Watch it alone. At night. Preferably when it’s raining and you’re wrapped in a blanket — ‘cause yeah, that’s the mood.
7/10
Would recommend. But also… don’t watch it while stuck in traffic or during a road trip. You’ve been warned.
